În 1970, Reginald Kenneth Dwight, avea 23 de ani asortaţi unei cariere de cântăreţ de pub, în timpul căreia îşi luase numele de scenă Elton John, ca omagiu adus saxofonistului Elton Dean dar şi muzicianului şi actorului Long John Baldry. Primăvara l-a găsit pe Dwight făcând backing-vocals pentru Back Home, imnul naţionalei de fotbal a Angliei, care se pregătea să ia parte la Mondialul mexican. Lansase cu un an mai devreme Empty Sky, un album de rock psihedelic nu foarte băgat în seamă, dar simţea că e pregătit să dea marea lovitură.
Şi a dat-o. Cu single-ul Your Song, primul de pe albumul Elton John. Piesa, ale cărei versuri au fost scrise de Bernie Taupin, fusese folosită ca warm up song de trupa Three Dog Night, pentru care artistul mai compusese în ultimii ani. Culmea e că single-ul nu a fost lansat decât la şapte luni de la apariţia albumului, mai exact după lansarea celui de-al treilea album E.J., Tumbleweed Connection.
Versurile redau gândurile romantice ale unui inocent. Dwight şi Taupin locuiau împreună în acea vreme (în casa părinţilor lui John) iar dragostea dintre ei a fost subtil redată de Bernie: “It’s a little bit funny this feeling inside / I’m not one of those who can easily hide / I don’t have much money but boy if I did / I’d buy a big house where we both could live”. Your Song avea să fie doar unul dintre cântecele scrise de cei doi. John susţine că a făcut muzica în zece minute. Taupin, că a adăugat versurile a doua zi, la micul dejun. Urmele de cafea de pe manuscris ar putea sta mărturie. “Nu cred că am scris vreodată un cântec de dragoste mai bun ca Your Song“, a spus Elton într-un interviu destul de recent. Şi nici nu avea de ce să fie modest. Însuşi John Lennon a spus la un moment dat că Your Song “este cel mai bun lucru care s-a întâmplat de când ne-am întâmplat noi” (The Beatles). În acelaşi registru, revista Rolling Stone a definit piesa ca fiind “o baladă în stil McCartney” şi, în 2004, aceeaşi revistă a plasat-o pe locul 136 în topul celor mai bune 500 de melodii ale tuturor timpurilor.
Piesa a fost sursă de inspiraţie pentru Elton John în scrierea alteia: We All Fall In Love Sometimes, care este însăşi povestea melodiei Your Song. Your Song a făcut parte de pe coloana sonoră a filmului Welcome Home, dar şi de pe cea a muzicalului Moulin Rouge (interpretată de Ewan McGregor), a fost folosită într-o reclamă pentru Rimmel şi într-un episod din The Simpsons. De asemenea, Elton a deschis concertul din 2007 în memoria Dianei exact cu această melodie.
